These aircraft are most probably the most well known of all model aircraft as they are readily available.
I fly a little Pylon racing, old timers and gliders.
The reason I fly these events is because pylon, is racing, and control line racing is what comes first for me so the two go together. Old timers and gliders are similar to free flight except with radio control so you can bring them back to you, that is why I fly these types of radio controlled aircraft. There are many different types of radio aircraft but I will only talk about what I fly.
Old Timer Aircraft.
These aircraft where originally free flight model planes designed before December 1940 and all we have done is put radio equipment in them to be able to fly them on confined airspace. There are competitions using these type of aircraft and are run on the same lines as free flight competitions.

Radio Controlled Glider
These planes have no motors and are kept in the air by thermals, gliders are towed into the air by a winch system and then the pilot flies the glider into thermals in order to gain altitude. Competition flying is done a lot here in South Africa and there are clubs which cater for gliders only.

Pylon Racing
These racing planes are extremely fast and can reach speeds in excess of 300 km/h. There is a triangular course in which the planes fly, four planes fly together in a race and the race is over 10 laps of the course which equates to 4 km. Here in South Africa there are 3 classes of pylon racing flown which are, Standard Quickie 500 for standard production sport engines, Hot Quickie 500 for purpose built engines and the world championship class of F3D pylon racing.
